The Process

Each Urchin Surfboard is a unique, handmade creation resulting from a collaborative process.

I like to start with a written inquiry to find out exactly what you’re looking for in your next surfboard. What kind of waves you’ll be riding, what you’re working on in your surfing, what moves you about surfing right now. Then I make and present you with some scaled sample sketches. You pick one and decide on a finish and we’re off and running!

Surfboards, generally, are reductive sculptures. I begin with a roughed out form- a blank - and over a few days turn it into a machine for enjoying the energy of the ocean. Once I am happy with the shape, I can paint the blank and do any design work or original art at your request. I then bring the fragile foam creature up front to the guys at Halifax Glassing where they bring out the beauty of the board with artful, high quality glass jobs.
